Introduction

They are categorized into five main types based on their intended purpose: structural, weatherproof, ordinary, secondary  for insulating glass, and special-purpose silicone sealant.

  1. Structural Silicone:
    • Purpose: Primarily used for bonding glass and aluminum subframes structurally and for secondary sealing in hollow glass of hidden frame curtain walls.
    • Features: Designed to withstand wind and gravity loads, with high requirements for strength, aging resistance, and a certain level of elasticity.
  2. Weatherproof Silicone :
    • Purpose: Used for joint sealing to ensure airtightness, water tightness, and other protective properties.
    • Features: Must withstand significant changes in joint width, requiring high elasticity, aging resistance, and varying levels of modulus, with low strength requirements.
  3. Ordinary Silicone :
    • Purpose: Employed for sealing door and window joints, as well as external wall joints.
    • Features: Capable of accommodating changes in joint width with moderate displacement capacity requirements and lower strength demands.
  4. Secondary Silicone  for Insulating Glass
    • Purpose: Used for double-sealing insulating glass to maintain its structural stability.
    • Features: Typically characterized by high modulus, avoiding excessive softness, and sometimes necessitating specific structural requirements.
  5. Special Purpose Silicone :
    • Application: Tailored for joint sealing with specialized requirements such as fire prevention or mildew prevention.
    • Features: Requires special properties like mildew prevention or fire resistance to meet specific needs.

Silicone sealants exhibit distinct performance characteristics for different purposes, making them non-interchangeable. Using the wrong sealant type for a particular application can result in significant quality and safety hazards. Therefore, proper selection of sealants according to the specific requirements of each application is crucial.
